Physicians will have to specifically request Imprimis’ compounded formulation of the drug, which, unlike Turing’s product, is not FDA approved. Express Scripts Chief Medical Officer Steve Miller told PULSE that educating doctors should be relatively easy since this drug is used in small volumes, noting only 350 doctors prescribed the drug to patients using Express Scripts pharmacy benefits last year. But he didn’t see compounding as a viable solution for many other high-cost drugs, particularly those prescribed at high volumes.
… Unlike Miller, Imprimis CEO Mark Baum said that he sees compounding as part of a broader solution to drive competition and push down drug prices. He's in Washington to lobby lawmakers for more FDA oversight of compounding, which he believes will help lift his industry.
