A former trainer at Penn National Race Course will spend 3 months in Dauphin County prison for "doping" his horses to give them an edge in races.
And, under a sentence county Judge Deborah E. Curcillo imposed Monday morning, David Wells will follow his jail stint with a 3-month stay in the county work-release center followed by 4 1/2 years on probation.
On top of that, Curcillo fined the 50-year-old Grantville man $5,000.
By sending Wells to prison on his guilty plea in the race-fixing case, Curcillo sided with Assistant U.S. Attorney William A. Behe, who argued that Wells is a "liar" whose actions in administering performance-enhancing substances to his steeds undermined an industry that relies on a reputation for honesty.
