Traditional compounding may consist of converting a drug in tablet form to a liquid form or production of a topical agent where traditional drugs are not meeting the needs of the patient. Contemporary compounding on the other hand was defined as an "emerging substandard drug industry that exploits the traditional role of compounding by taking advantage of current loopholes in the law and resource constraints with regulators."3 This industry is reported to be supported by distributors supplying chemicals, equipment, and marketing materials so that instead of the individualized production of compounds in traditional compounding, contemporary compounding may involve production on a larger scale.
