Retailers and drug stores may no longer sell over-the-counter (OTC) products containing dextromethorphan (DXM) to minors without a prescription in Louisiana. With Governor Bobby Jindal’s signature on HB 514 (PDF), the state became the sixth to pass legislation prohibiting the sale of OTC DXM cough medications to minors, indicates a news release from the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), which supports the law. The law imposes fines of up to $1,000 on retailers who sell DXM products to minors and fines of up to $200 for minors who purchase or attempt to purchase the product.
