GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs has suspended the licenses of three pharmacists convicted of mislabeling drugs and selling them while working in Kentwood.
James Orr, Eugene Biegert and Thomas Verhage can no longer practice as pharmacists.
Federal agents raided Kentwood Pharmacy in 2010 after receiving a tip that it was improperly storing and dispensing drugs.
Authorities found the pharmacy had collected old drugs from nursing and foster homes, repackaged them and sold them as new. The feds say the scheme was “potentially lethal” because it led to cross-contamination, which is dangerous for people with drug allergies.
Beigert, Orr and Verhage entered in to plea agreements last year for their parts in the scheme. Orr and Verhage were find $30,000 in November 2013. Biegert was fined $15,000.
The pharmacy’s owner Kim Mulder and eight others have also been indicted on federal charges of conspiracy to misbrand drugs and conspiracy to create false prescription records.
