Woman develops serious infection from contaminated injection

A woman in Louisiana allegedly received a contaminated injection in 2012, leading to a serious infection that required surgery, her product liability and medical malpractice lawsuit stated. Michelle Ellzey filed suit against several doctors, the Pelican State Outpatient Center in New Orleans where she received the injection and the maker of the injection, Main Street Family Pharmacy, The Louisiana Record reported.
Ellzey went to Pelican State Outpatient Center on Dec. 26, 2012 complaining of body aches, tiredness, coughing and nasal congestion, the source said. Dr. James Patterson, one of the doctors named in the suit, diagnosed her with an upper respiratory infection and Ellzey was given an injection of what she was told was called DepoMedrol - a drug manufactured by Main Street Pharmacy.
After the injection, however, Ellzey said the hole made by the needle swelled and she began to experience pain. Dr. Jorge Contreras, another doctor named in the lawsuit, allegedly told Ellzey the pain was normal. Yet, in October 2012, it was discovered the injection caused an infectious mass to form at the site the shot was given. The mass needed to be removed surgically, the Record reported.
Ellzey is seeking an unspecified amount of damages for physical pain and suffering as well as her mental anguish, worry, concern and medical expenses, the source said.
