Stinebaugh Responds to Suspension: Points to Transcript of Hearing at Sunland Park Board of Stewards

Trainer John Stinebaugh, who on Saturday received a 16-year suspension and $40,000 fine from the New Mexico Racing Commission after four horses in his care tested positive for Sildenafil in July, told Ray Paulick of PaulickReport.com that contamination is to blame. Stinebaugh said he plans to appeal the suspension.

Stinebaugh told Paulick that the positive test for Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, came from contaminated cinnamon ginseng powder that originated in China, then went through a pharmaceutical company in Canada and ultimately a compounding pharmacy in Texas as part of a product called Tourniquet designed to treat exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH, or bleeding).

In the article on PaulickReport.com, Stinebaugh points to similar cases in Iowa that only resulted in short suspensions or small fines because of evidence of contamination.

Stinebaugh also pointed to the transcript of his hearing before the Sunland Park board of stewards.
