The Marion Pain Management Center in Ocala had been running a few minutes behind when Roseann Fusco walked in, but that was little concern.
The procedure was supposed to be simple enough. It would be a single steroid shot in her back to alleviate chronic pain fromherniated discs and other spinal maladies. The steroid was preservative-free methylprednisolone acetate, made by New England Compounding Center (NECC), a compounding pharmacy in Framingham, Mass.
Fusco's doctors told her the injection would provide some temporary relief until they could perform back surgery. She said she knew there could be complications: a bruised nerve, an allergic reaction, some nausea from the medicine, but nothing prepared her for what was to come.
