The change is unusual – Wingate’s will be the only pharmacy in the region that sells only compounded medicines – but it isn’t unique, said Ernest Gates, of Gates Healthcare Associates in Massachusetts. "There are about 3,500 compounders across the country ... The majority are a mixture of compounding and retail, but more and more are going into compounding only. There are no real statistics on how many are compounding-only, but I think you’re going to see more of this – more isolating the compounding business – because of the requirements and the pending legislation." David Ball, of the Ball Consulting Group in Massachusetts, said compound medicines make up 1 percent to 3 percent of all prescriptions in the U.S. Most pharmacies do little or no compounding.
