There are some things you should know about a veterinary compounding pharmacy. Compounding is the science, art and expertise of combining two or more ingredients to produce a customized medication. The problem with some medications that your pet needs to take is that was designed for people and is not available in a form that fits the needs of a dog or cat. The purpose of a compounding pharmacy is to reformulate the medication so that it is convenient for a domestic pet to take it. It is possible that your veterinarian will prescribe a medication and request that the compounding pharmacy make it into a flavored oral liquid or in a smaller sized capsule that will appeal to a dog or cat. In addition, compounding medicine helps you to give your pet the exact dose they need and it is in a dosage form that works best for your pet. It helps to reduce the stress of giving medication to your pet. Plus, compounding medicine offers you the opportunity to give your dog his or her medication in a treat form that masks the taste and smell of the medication. On the other hand, medications for a cat can include preparations that can be rubbed into the ear or meat-flavored pastes that can be placed on the foreleg. Then when the cat grooms itself it also medicates itself.

In addition, there are some other things that you should know about a veterinary compounding pharmacy. In fact, there are some differences between a regular pharmacy and a compounding pharmacy. Only medications that are mass-produced and already on the market are offered by regular pharmacies. However, a veterinary compounding pharmacy specializes in custom made drugs as well as offer the same non-compounded and over the counter drugs that regular pharmacies offer.
