Lawmakers approve House version of Haile's drug bill


Without a word of opposition, the Tennessee House unanimously approved legislation April 11 that eliminates what advocates contend is a major safeguard for patients who need specially compounded drugs.
The bill, which the Senate had already approved, passed 90-0 after a brief discussion. The measure removes a longstanding provision in state law requiring that a drug be compounded by a licensed pharmacist only when a prescription for a specific patient has been issued. The prescription requirement would be lifted if a product “is not commercially available.”
The legislation was sponsored by Sen. Ferrell Haile, R-Gallatin, in the Senate.
