Michigan Attorney General Will Have Grand Jury Probe NECC
Yet another shoe has dropped in the compounding pharmacy scandal that resulted in a nationwide fungal meningitis outbreak. The Michigan Attorney General has now requested that a multi-country grand jury be convened to investigate whether the New England Compounding Center broke any state laws by distributing tainted injectables to residents who visited various clinics.
To date, 733 cases have been reported around the country, include 53 deaths, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of those, 259 were reported in Michigan, and 14 have resulted in death. The state, so far, has recorded both the largest number of cases and deaths (see CDC data here and back story on FDA findings here).
