The fines assessed by the Tennessee Board of Pharmacy total $23,700. One of its three plants in Arlington operated without a pharmacy license for 15.5 years. A second one did so for three years. The third plant had no license for a year and nine months.
Drug manufacturers are required to sign up for pharmacy licenses and agree to inspections to ensure sterility and quality safeguards.
Joyce McDaniel, the lone consumer representative on the state board, sought a higher fine. She made a motion that the company fine Wright $250 for every month its plants operated without a license — which would have totaled $60,750. Her motion died for lack of a second. The board approved the smaller fine recommended by its attorney.
Wright Medical, which ships products to more than 60 countries, had $483.8 million in global sales last year. The company did not comment after being contacted by The Tennessean about the fine.
