On behalf of CSHP, Legislative & Regulatory Analyst Jonathan Nelson attended and spoke at the Board’s Enforcement Committee Meeting last Thursday in Garden Grove and today at the Board’s first meeting of its reconvened compounding subcommittee.
Last Thursday, Nelson stated that drug shortages are increasingly challenging the ability of pharmacists to provide critical medications for patients and asked that the issue be added to an upcoming Board meeting. CSHP will continue promoting discussion and seeking solutions to help alleviate this troubling issue.
Comments were also offered at today’s Compounding Subcommittee meeting regarding the Board’s proposed legislation to tighten sterile compounding requirements. One of the requirements in the legislation states that a pharmacy seeking to obtain a sterile compounding pharmacy license must send to the Board “a list of all sterile medications compounded by the pharmacy since the last license renewal.” CSHP asked for clarification regarding what components should be included in the list. The Board stated that typically legislation will offer a flexible framework that a Board regulatory rulemaking will then refine. However, CSHP stated that there will be continue to be a level of confusion among pharmacists until this language is tightened.
