Meningitis outbreak: Quick dose of drugs slows rate of deaths

Twelve of the 78 people sickened with fungal meningitis in Tennessee have died — a 15 percent mortality rate, but one that state epidemiologist Dr. Tim F. Jones says is deceiving.

Patients who are diagnosed early and who receive prompt treatment with antifungal medications have much better survival prospects. Thirty-five of these patients have been discharged from hospitals — 15 of them on Friday, according to the Tennessee Department of Health
