Doctors unsure of recovery time for meningitis patients

As increased numbers of meningitis patients leave hospital care, health officials remain uncertain how long it will take for the patients' health to be fully restored.
"The clinical course for each patient differs, and it is too early to say what their long-term function and care issues will be," said Dr. Lakshmi Halasyamani, chief medical officer at Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital in Washtenaw County, where at least 75 patients have been treated for meningitis-related symptoms since late September. Of those, 45 are recovering at home.
After-care issues came into sharper focus with the recent hospitalization and release of George Cary, whose wife, Lillian, was among seven Michigan residents to have died of fungal meningitis.
