The nationwide meningitis
outbreak linked to contaminated steroid injections made in a Massachusetts
specialty pharmacy bears chilling similarities to the case of Doc's
Pharmacy in Walnut Creek.
In spring 2001, three people died and nearly a dozen
were hospitalized after receiving cortisone injections in their spines and
developing meningitis. The shots, which had been made from scratch at Doc's in a
common pharmacy practice known as compounding, were later found to have been
tainted with bacteria.
