Howell woman sues in meningitis outbreak

A 46-year-old Howell woman has filed what is believed to be the first lawsuit in Michigan stemming from this month’s meningitis outbreak.
Attorneys for Brenda Bansale field suit Monday in U.S. District Court in Detroit seeking damages from New England Compounding Pharmacy, Inc. the Massachusetts-based company whose recalled steroid products are linked to the outbreak.
Bansale received a steroid injection at Michigan Pain specialists in Genoa Township on Aug. 28.
“She became ill on Oct. 4,” said her attorney Allyson Oliver of The Oliver Law Group of Rochester, who filed the class action suit on Bansale’s behalf.
Oliver said her client remains hospitalized at Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital in Washtenaw County with a confirmed case of fungal meningitis.
Oliver described her client as a homemaker.
“She had just completed her associate’s degree and was really happy about that when she took ill,” Oliver said.
